Door Staff

Employment Opportunity

TERM: November 18th 2019 - April 30 2020
(Occasional summer work available)

RATE OF PAY: $11.75 per hour plus Vacation Pay

DUTIES: Checking IDs at the door of the Axe Bar and Grill or Students’ Centre events; responsible for crowd control, cleaning of the bar, and enforcement of Nova Scotia Liquor Control Act and ASU door policies.

TRAINING: Consists of a mandatory training session before the start of the academic year plus periodic training seminars throughout the year.

PREREQUISITES: Previous door staff experience is considered an asset. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Experience in fast-paced environment. Must comply with the ASU’s Academic Standards Policy. Certification in Non Violent Crisis Intervention is considered an asset.

HOURS: Shifts are scheduled depending on school and workload. Expect approximately 5-15 hours per week.

1. General Responsibility

While on duty, the position of Door Staff works to ensure that the Axe Bar and Grill and Students’ Centre bar events provide an enjoyable and safe environment for patrons. Door Staff report to the Door Staff Supervisor, assistant managers, and Bar Services Manager.

2. Specific Duties

(a) to check ID's and sign in patrons, refusing admittance to those who may be banned, not 19 years of age, lacking proper ID, over intoxicated, or in violation of the ASU’s Event Admission and Door Policy;
(b) to handle problems in a friendly and courteous manner;
(c) to remove patrons who are over intoxicated or causing a problem;
(d) to coordinate with Safety and Security on walk home, medical emergencies, and other problems;
(e) to help complete the bar and bar areas cleaning lists at the end of the night;
(f) to help with the setup/teardown of Bar Services Events;
(g) to report any problems to the Manager or designate.

3. Miscellaneous

(a) to be familiar with ASU and NS Liquor Regulations;
(b) to help promote the Axe Bar and Grill and Students’ Centre events;
(c) to be familiar with ASU personnel and procedures;
(d) the Door Staff may, from time to time, be assigned duties other than those listed above.

General Manager - Acadia Students’ Union

Acadia Students’ Union (ASU) is an independent, not-for-profit, student-run organization which draws its authority from provincial legislation and represents the interests of approximately 3,300 full and part-time students at Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

The ASU currently has an opening for a multi-talented professional to fill the role of General Manager.

Reporting to the President of ASU, and working closely with the Executive Committee and the Students’ Representative Council, you will provide leadership and direction to this diverse organization, which includes administration, budgeting and finances, event management, facilities management, human resource management, policy development, retail operations, strategic planning, student advocacy, student health and dental benefits, and support for clubs, house councils, and internal organizations.

A strong leader and facilitator, you will provide guidance and support to an experienced staff of six full-time staff members and approximately 75 student staff.

What qualities are needed as General Manager?

As the ideal candidate, you have a proven track record in the private, public, or not-for-profit sectors. A strong relationship builder, your collaborative and consultative approach for conducting business is very much respected and you are known for your ability to motivate people to meet difficult and challenging objectives.  

Personally, you are an effective leader and communicator. You are respected for your integrity and accountability. Operationally, you have proven skills in administration, finance, governance, human resources, negotiation, retail operations, and policy development. You are skillful in the management of people and actively support others in achieving their job performance objectives.

Knowledge of the challenges facing post secondary institutions, its students, and higher education in general is an asset in this role.
