George Philp

President

HOMETOWN: Barrie, Ontario

YEAR OF STUDY: 5th

PROGRAM OF STUDY: Environmental and Sustainability Studies (ESST)

WHAT I DO:

As President, my role is to listen to students and work with other student leaders within the ASU and across Nova Scotia and Canada and Acadia University staff, faculty, and administration to respond to the ideas, aspirations, and concerns of students. The President has the responsibility of promoting student safety, wellness, and engagement within the Acadia University community. As President I sit on the University Senate, the academic governing body of the university, the University Board of Governors, the non-academic governing body of the university, and the Town of Wolfville Town and Gown Committee. Also, along with the Vice President Academic and External, the President represents Acadia students at our external advocacy organizations including Students Nova Scotia (SNS) and the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) to advocate for the affordability and accessibility of post-secondary education within Nova Scotia and across Canada.

MY GOALS FOR THE YEAR:

  1. Advocating for improved student services on campus, including: enhancing the accessibility of medical and mental health, food security, and equity and inclusion supports on campus.
  2. ASU Communication and Outreach: enhancing students’ understanding of the ASU, the services we offer, and the role the organization fulfills in supporting student life and wellness on-campus, to enhance student engagement within the organization.
  3. Student Safety and Wellness: work with the university and our external advocacy organizations to promote alcohol harms reduction, sexual violence prevention, and safe substance use within the Acadia University Community.
  4. Student financial wellness: work with the university to ensure a process is in place to ensure students are adequately consulted in advance of tuition increases and with Students Nova Scotia, and the province of Nova Scotia to ensure appropriate tuition caps within the province and to advocate for new programs that support the affordability and accessibility of post-secondary education in Nova Scotia.

FUN FACT ABOUT ME: I have been to 10/13 Canadian Provinces and Territories and I love to canoe and ski!

A Note from George Philp:

Capitalize on the small size of Acadia, get to know the people around you – your classmates, professors, campus leaders, and neighbors – and work with one another to support a better Acadia community – it will help you in the long run!
