HOMETOWN: Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
YEAR OF STUDY: Fourth
PROGRAM OF STUDY: Bachelor of Arts with Major in Politics
WHAT I DO:
As the VP Academic & External, I work as a resource for supporting students’ voice. My job for the academic side of my position is to support students in their academic experience while working in collaboration with university administration and the faculty. A part of my role is being a student representative in the university Senate and relevant Senate committees. I am largely a liaison between the Union and the offices of the University Vice President Academic, the Registrar, Admissions, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Career Services, the Learning Commons, and the Student Resource Centre. In the external part of my position, I represent Acadia as a delegate with our external advocacy. I sit as a voting member on our two advocacy organizations; provincially for our provincial Students Nova Scotia (SNS) and federally for The Canadian Alliance of Student Assoications (CASA). Through these organizations, I help to conduct research, create policy and advocate on behalf of students. Overall, I am a resource in supporting students’ academic experience at Acadia. In line with that, my door is always open and I am readily available via email or phone!
MY GOALS FOR THE YEAR:
My goal for this year is to create effective communication between students and my position, in order to receive feedback to areas of issue that I can provide support. I want to strive for strong communication from our Acadia campus to external organizations and back! The benefit of our external advocacy work needs to be better communicated to students in order to educate, and in order to receive more feedback on student issues. Another focus of mine is researching and working ensuring the relationship between mental health support and processes and academics. I want to be an active listener and a strong voice for students over the course of my term!
Fun Fact About Me:
I went on an exchange to Australia last year (and LOVE to talk about it!)
Our campus is filled with knowledgeable and passionate students… with this in mind, I would love to get more students involved with the work of the ASU and our external organizations. If you have an interest in policy, advocacy, government relations, or improving the academic experience in general, reach out to me, as I’d love to hear your ideas and/or get you further involved with our work!
